Anthropic published its densest artificial intelligence threat report yet, saying it stopped Claude misuse across seven harm areas from December 2025 through August 2026.

Anthropic on Sept. 10, 2026, published "Detecting and countering misuse of AI: September 2026," which it calls its most detailed threat-intelligence disclosure on Claude misuse.

The company says its Threat Intelligence team identified and disrupted operations from December 2025 through August 2026 across seven harm areas: cyber operations, influence operations, surveillance, scams and fraud, biological misuse, conventional weapons development, and illicit distillation.

Anthropic says the actors included suspected state-sponsored groups, financially motivated criminals, commercial spyware vendors, state propaganda institutions and politically motivated individuals, and that Claude Haiku, Sonnet and Opus appeared in the cases. The company says Fable and Mythos-class models were not involved, with one illicit-distillation exception noted.

A central company claim is that artificial intelligence is collapsing the labor and tooling gap that once separated well-resourced state operators from individuals, so attack sophistication is a weaker signal of who is behind an operation.

Anthropic says it disrupted each case, hardened safeguards and shared intelligence with authorities and industry partners where appropriate. Treat the case narratives as company-reported accounts, not independently adjudicated findings.
