Runway brings video training to robot control with Praxis-1

Hardware partners are testing the model before a planned release of its weights

Runway's Praxis-1 applies video-model training to robots. Access remains limited to selected partners, with public weights planned for the coming months.

Runway unveiled Praxis-1, a robot-control model built on video training, in a bid to reduce reliance on costly robot demonstrations. Hardware partners are testing it ahead of public release.

The system turns lessons from video about objects and movement into commands for physical machines. Runway calls it a world action model, extending its video-generation research into robot control.

Runway says Noble Machines, Standard Bots and Ultra are running Praxis-1 on their own hardware. Its demonstrations span a two-arm setup, Standard Bots' RO1 arm and a mobile robot base.

In a placement experiment, Runway reports errors of 16.1 centimeters after web-video pretraining and 16.0 centimeters after training on remotely operated robot footage. Both results followed fine-tuning; the company's reported uncertainty does not establish an advantage for either video source.

Runway announced the model Sept. 30 and plans to publish its weights in the coming months. The announcement gives no firm release date or licensing terms, and the company says partner testing will assess performance and safety before general availability.
