Microsoft is adding Grok models from xAI to Copilot in Word, Excel and PowerPoint through the Microsoft Frontier Program, its early-access channel for Copilot features. Microsoft's announcement is dated Sept. 12, 2026, and was updated Sept. 14, 2026. For the IT staff who manage Copilot at a company, choosing Grok means sending work to an outside AI lab rather than only to models Microsoft hosts.
Microsoft said it has added the lab, under the name SpaceXAI, to its Online Services Subprocessor List, its list of outside companies that handle customer data for it. Access is controlled by a separate administrator setting that is off by default. Microsoft calls the release a focused Frontier preview to gather feedback on common office tasks. Grok is not available to Frontier customers in the European Union, the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) or the United Kingdom during the preview, Microsoft said.
Microsoft's support documentation says SpaceXAI's models are hosted outside Microsoft, so Microsoft's customer agreements, its commitments on where data is stored and related controls do not apply when an organization chooses them. xAI's enterprise terms apply instead.
Microsoft has not said which Grok version powers the preview; its announcement names only the Grok model family. The company says it will weigh customer feedback, usage and product fit before offering the models more widely in Copilot.
