Microsoft on Friday redesigned Copilot into a single work app with three tabs: Home, Code, and Autopilot. Jared Spataro, chief marketing officer for AI at Work, said the goal is one place to ask, delegate, build, and automate. Reuters and The Verge carried the company post the same day. Autopilot is the cloud remake of Scout, the always-on agent Microsoft showed earlier this year. If enterprises adopt it, long-running agents would sit inside the same Microsoft 365 tenant controls as Chat and Office.
Home is the default landing surface. It combines Copilot Chat with Cowork, the mode for end-to-end delegated jobs such as an RFP response or a launch kit. Office in Copilot embeds Word, Excel, and PowerPoint so drafts and decks stay live, editable files rather than chat paste. Spataro says Copilot will soon route a request to Chat, Cowork, or Code without the user picking a mode first.
Code lets non-developers describe an app, tracker, dashboard, or automation in natural language. Microsoft says it uses the same underlying technology as GitHub Copilot, runs in a sandboxed tenant environment, and can publish cloud-hosted internal apps. Copilot Managed Runtime is the hosting layer Microsoft put in preview for that work. Code reaches Frontier at the end of the month, with a later preview for Microsoft 365 Premium and Pro subscribers.
Autopilot, previously called Scout, is framed as a digital teammate with its own identity, memory, computer, and workspace inside the customer tenant. Users can name it, set a role and goal, and @mention it in Teams, Outlook, chats, and documents. Microsoft says it is built on Microsoft IQ, with permissions, audit, and governance behind it. Annie Pearl, corporate vice president of Copilot Product, told Reuters many organizations struggled to bring agents into the enterprise because of security, compliance, and governance concerns.
Pricing splits everyday chat from agentic work. A user subscription license covers Copilot in Chat and across Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams. Cowork, Code, Autopilot, and frontier models such as Astra and Fable run on usage-based billing. FinOps for AI tools are meant to show credit use and set spend policies. Home and Code start rolling out to Frontier in the coming weeks. Autopilot expands to private preview at the end of September. This is a Microsoft product announce. It is not the older Copilot-Grok Frontier connector story, and it is not OpenAI's agent-breach disclosures.
