NVIDIA and Perplexity on Sept. 14, 2026, made Portable Computer available in the Perplexity app for Windows on compatible GeForce RTX and RTX PRO machines. The release extends a local agent stack that had already shipped on NVIDIA DGX Spark systems and on RTX PCs running Linux.
Portable Computer is Perplexity's on-device version of Perplexity Computer. It plans and runs multistep tasks with local models, keeps sensitive files on the PC, and does not consume Perplexity Computer credits for work finished on device. When a task needs web research or stronger cloud reasoning, the companies say the agent asks permission before sending anything off-device.
Company claims: NVIDIA says setup uses a local model such as Qwen 3.8 27B that is post-trained for Perplexity Computer and optimized for RTX GPUs. Connectors listed in the NVIDIA blog include Microsoft Outlook, OneDrive, Word, Google Drive, Gmail, Slack, and GitHub. Perplexity says the Windows release is available to Pro and Max subscribers, that the local orchestrator can schedule recurring work, and that desktop apps can connect through local Model Context Protocol servers. NVIDIA says DGX Station support is expected soon.
Independent coverage from Digital Trends and Tom's Hardware on Sept. 14 and 15 reported the same Windows ship, the 24GB VRAM floor, and the Pro or Max subscription gate. Tom's Hardware noted cards that meet the stated VRAM bar include the GeForce RTX 3090, 3090 Ti, and 4090 at 24GB and the GeForce RTX 5090 at 32GB, plus several RTX PRO Blackwell parts. Digital Trends framed the agent as running its stack on supported NVIDIA hardware rather than only giving a cloud agent access to local files.
What remains open is how well everyday RTX desktops clear the 24GB bar without upgrades, when DGX Station and October RTX Spark Windows PCs widen the install base, and how often users escalate to cloud models in practice. Company launch posts and independent hardware write-ups should be weighed together on those points.
